The Halifax Progress Association is thrilled to announce the success of their community raffle event, which brought together locals for six rounds of excitement, prizes, and celebration. The atmosphere was filled with joy as many lucky winners took home fantastic prizes, spreading smiles and cheer throughout the day.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Slipway for the amazing venue and Halifax Meats for their generous delicious hams, which were a highlight of the prizes as well as Halifax Pharmacy, Halifax SPAR and BWS Ingham for your amazing prizes,” said a Halifax Progress Association spokesperson.

“Your support added so much value to our event, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

“A special mention goes to the Lucinda Cove Resort for their lovely and thoughtful donation. Your contribution truly reflects the strength of community spirit and collaboration in our region.

“We also want to give a huge shoutout to Michelle from The Halipad for providing the amazing music that kept everyone entertained and in high spirits. Your talent added a lively and festive vibe to the entire day!

“It was heartwarming to see everyone come together and have the best time at this successful event. From the buzzing excitement of the raffles to the friendly faces that make Halifax such a wonderful place, today was a true celebration of community connection. Special mention must go to "Santa" for coming to visit!

The Ingham Branch of the Leukemia Foundation held their Christmas Hoy at the Ingham Bowls Club on the 7th December and it was a huge success, with 125 people attending, money was raised to help families in the Townsville Hospital Freemasons Units.

The Christmas Hoy is the Ingham Branch of the Leukemia Foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and with the money raised the team usually buy hampers for patients battling Leukemia, but President Janice Leach said they did something different this year.

“For each family in the units, we have purchased a $50 gift voucher so they can purchase something of their choice,” she said.

“It is nice to be able to give to somebody and make a Christmas for everyone.”

Money for the gift vouchers was raised during the Christmas Hoy raffles.

There are 18 unis at the Townsville Hospital that the Ingham Leukemia Foundation support, and they do more than just Christmas gifts once a year. Recently, they assisted in getting a house cleaned for woman’s home that had been in the hospital for six months, so she arrived home to a clean house. They have also supplied units with televisions, or other home comforts that patients may need.

Janice added that they like to ensure all money raised is spent locally.

“We like to keep our money in our local district, because the business houses here are really wonderful,” said Janice.

“We are extremely grateful to our local businesses for their very generous donations towards our cause.”

A photograph perfectly capturing a moment of quiet beauty and unexpected wonder, Amanda Griffiths’ “Whispers In The Wind” photography piece was awarded first prize in the 46th Hinchinbrook Art Awards.

Amanda taught herself the art of photography after perusing her love for observation and followed a journey of trial and error, constantly experimenting with her camera to capture the beauty around her.

“I’ve always felt an affinity for the natural world, noticing the textures, patterns and the small details that others might overlook,” shared Amanda.

“It brings me so much joy to be able to freeze those fleeting moments and share them with others.”

In owning a florist, Mandy’s Beauty In The Bush, Amanda often finds herself dipping her toe outside of the square when it comes to exploring her creative endeavours and finds enjoyment in focusing on the smallest details of her projects.

Amanda’s piece, “Whispers In The Wind” pictures a blooming Desert Rose seed pod and illustrates a meaningful message of both resilience and growth through her lens and technique.

“One afternoon, I was sitting on my front patio enjoying a cup of tea when I noticed something delicate floating in the air – it was almost like a whisper – light, fleeting and graceful,” explained Amanda.

“At first, I was struck by its fragility and elegance but as I looked at it more closely, I realised there was something powerful about it too.”

Understanding a Desert Rose’s ability to flourish under harsh conditions, Amanda hopes her piece communicates strength and the courage to endure despite the challenges life may present.

“The piece feels deeply personal to me, not just as an artist, but as a person navigating life’s ups and downs,” added Amanda.

“I hope it conveys a message of hope and faith – reminding us that even in moments of stillness, there is strength, growth, and the potential for something new to emerge.”

With a lifelong love of the outdoors, David Wilkinson draws inspiration from both natural beauty and his treasured memories of the British countryside to create award-winning paintings, including a recently celebrated piece titled, “Wild Light”.

Venturing on a camping trip through the northwest coast of Scotland, David stumbled upon the picturesque Sandwood Bay and felt himself immediately inspired to capture the exquisite scene.

“The light and colours on show were terrific,” David reminisced.

“Wild Light was a bit of a change in style for me, more spontaneous and adventurous with colours and contrasts – I personally like it very much as there is a lot of feeling in it, but was less sure how it might stand up to public showing.”

With the encouragement of a few of David’s closest friends and family, he made the decision to enter his piece into the 46th Hinchinbrook Art Awards where he was absolutely delighted to be awarded first prize.

“Having been to the TYTO Regional Art Gallery to see the exhibition, I fully understand, and feel what other artists mean when they have won an award and speak of feeling humbled by all the other great works and talent on display, as that is exactly how I feel,” explained David.

“TYTO is a brilliant gallery, and I’m thrilled to have achieved my first career award here.”

David discovered his passion for painting in 2019 after dabbling with oils and acrylics. Embarking on a self-guided artistic journey, David captures both sun-soaked scenes from Australia as well as moody British settings – drawing from his memories of living in the United Kingdom.

Looking ahead, David has been offered the outstanding opportunity to showcase his artwork at the Gallery East in Sydney’s Clovelly in November of 2025, and cannot wait to continue exploring his passion.

“I feel very much on a journey, we will see where painting takes me!”

Mark Bishop, a talented artist with a love for a unique and intricate artform, was awarded the Local Artist Award at the 46th Hinchinbrook Art Awards for his piece titled “Youth and Beauty”.

A boilermaker and welder by trade, Mark began to explore metal art as a hobby following on from his retirement, and began to discover his hidden, artistic talents.

“I always wanted to try something different using metal but never had the time until I moved from Tasmania to Forrest Beach,” explained Mark.

With the encouragement of his friends, Mark decided to open a market stall to sell the art he had crafted from recycled cutlery, where he was then presented with the opportunity to install some pieces at the TYTO Regional Art Gallery.

“I entered the Hinchinbrook Bird Life Awards in 2022 and won the Local Artist Award with a black cockatoo made from recycled sheet metal,” Mark added.

Mark was honourably welcomed as a judge at 2023’s Hinchinbrook Art Awards, with his passion for the artform leading him to craft a piece to enter the Hinchinbrook Bird Life Awards, held earlier this year. Successfully winning the Sculpture Form Award led Mark to enter a fantastic peacock sculpture titled “Youth and Beauty” in November’s Hinchinbrook Art Awards exhibition.

“This piece took over 200 hours to craft, and every individual feather goes through five steps to complete,” shared Mark.

“Winning that award was totally unexpected as the quality of the entrant’s work is always of a high standard, and since winning a few awards and having my artwork at TYTO I have been asked to do various commission pieces which I really enjoyed!”

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at TYTO and all the people involved in these awards for all the work that goes on behind the scenes and would encourage other people to try their hand with various art works.”

A beautiful depiction of one of the ocean’s most beloved creatures, Marian Cerqui’s mixed media piece titled “Turtle” was awarded first prize at the 46th Hinchinbrook Art Awards held in November.

Marian’s passion for the mixed media artform has led her to experiment and work within all areas of textile art from sewing to crafting.

“I have been a sewer from a young age, and have accomplished various types of craft,” shared Marian.

“I am basically self-taught in all areas of being a textile artist and I like to put together different elements to create an unusual look.”

Created in May, Marian’s award-winning piece was developed under the guidance of fellow textile artist, Sophie Standing.

“It takes a lot of time to blend colours in fabric and thread as you are sewing with thread as paint and it has taken me hours and hours of sewing to create this piece,” Marian added.

“Attention to detail is what I thrive on, and I wanted the turtle to be memorable in a way that the viewer could see the sun shining through the water and into its back.”

Although Marian currently practices the artform as a hobby in her spare time, she believes you never truly know what is just around the corner following on from her recent achievement.

Travelling from Townsville alongside her daughter and friend to attend the evening held at the TYTO Regional Art Gallery, Marian felt both surprised and honoured to receive first place in the mixed media category and celebrated her win with a glass of wine and plenty of smiles.

“I love to create 3D pieces using paint, fabric, and thread in my artwork and this type of artwork is the road ahead for me,” explained Marian.

“I have several ideas waiting to get started, and I will be entering again next year.”

Fran Nason has had a love for creating art since she was a child and held strong aspirations to become an art teacher specialising in painting after completing her schooling.

After moving from Brisbane to Cairns at the age of twenty, Fran decided to explore a new artform, and pursued a course in lead lighting where she learnt the fundamentals of glass cutting.

“I fell in love with the beautiful colours of the stained glass, and over the years, I developed my skills by making many art pieces for family and friends in my spare time,” explained Fran.

In 2000, Fran and her young family moved to Weipa, where she began teaching the unique artform to many local ladies in a space under her home.

“It was a great social gathering for us, and one night my husband overheard us saying, “wouldn’t it be good if we had a kiln to fuse glass”, and to my surprise, he bought me one as a present for our anniversary,” shared Fran.

With her new kiln, Fran taught herself to fuse and slump glass, and following her retirement as an educator to children with special needs three years ago, her family relocated to Forrest Beach where Fran finds plenty of time to practise her glasswork.

A simple hobby, Fran creates glass art for the local Hinchinbrook Markets here and there to continue funding her passion, and earlier this year, she decided to enter a piece in the 46th Hinchinbrook Art Awards where she received the Overall Acquisitive Award for her piece, “Wallaman Falls at Dusk”.

“The beautiful piece of timber which frames the lead light was gifted to me from a friend’s father’s farm on the Tablelands, and it was the shape of this and the want to create artwork that represents Hinchinbrook that inspired me,” Fran added.

Fran’s talents have been displayed and celebrated on multiple occasions, including winning Champion Exhibit earlier this year at the Ingham Show.

“I am forever learning new techniques to improve my artwork and taking on more challenges, and I enjoy seeing the joy people receive from my artwork.”

In celebration of her artistic talents, Joanne Bingham was awarded first prize in the 46th Hinchinbrook Art Awards’ works on paper category for her piece titled “Evening Light” in November.

Jo has been painting and drawing for as long as she can remember, and in pursuing her passion further, she undertook studies at an art college located in the United Kingdom where she specialised in illustration.

In the early years of her artistic career, Jo created paintings of pets which quickly gained plenty of traction, transforming into a fulltime career which she still practices today.

“I love the serenity of creating, and the delight of owners when you present their artwork to them never fades,” shared Jo.

Now an art teacher herself, Jo hosts classes and workshops across North Queensland, creating works on occasion for exhibitions and art award showcases, including her most recent, award-winning piece.

“This was an unusual piece for me, I don’t often create such large works because of the amount of time it takes to create them and the difficulty of finding robust and large boards to draw on,” explained Jo.

In dedicating countless hours and days of work to creating “Evening Light”, Jo illustrated a Queensland paint horse, and focused heavily on capturing the perfect, late afternoon light, producing a magnificent result.

“I love horses, they feature heavily in my work,” Jo added.

“The drawing is very layered, and I worked to develop the interesting and contrasting colours of the horse, and the background – the horse is stunning, isn’t he.”

Jo has been celebrated for her talents on multiple occasions, including at both the Hinchinbrook Bird Art Awards, and the Cairns Art Awards.

“The feeling is indescribable, you never get over it, that happy feeling when someone really likes your work, and validation and recognition are a big part of why we enter these awards,” Jo said.

“I already have pieces on the easel for next year, and I have plans to enter both Hinchinbrook exhibitions and other national award competitions.”  

“I still love doing commissioned pieces of animals and that will always be a part of my career, as will teaching classes and workshops.”

The Taylors Beach Progress Association held a terrific celebration last weekend, welcoming waves of Christmas cheer and festive joy for the entire community to enjoy with the support of many local businesses and organisations.

Thankfully, the weather put on a wonderful show, keeping both the grounds and attendees dry for the Taylors Beach Progress Association’s annual Christmas Party on Saturday 7 December all the way through from 5pm to 10pm. The celebrations commenced with Luke Shepherdson as he treated audiences to his musical talents, with local legends, “Ukes-a-Mondo”, taking centre stage from 6pm to continue the live music throughout the evening.

Made possible through the generous donations from local organisations, a delicious selection of sausages and burgers were on offer with Taylors Beach Progress Association’s Treasurer, Michael Harris, putting his chef hat on to man the barbeque. The hospitality certainly didn’t stop there with Association President, Jim Anderson, as head of the bar, to ensure the evening ran smoothly, and attendees were kept refreshed.

With a world of activities also on offer for children to enjoy like face painting and raffles manned by Committee Members, Mary Clapperton, and Emma and Robert Wason, the event was a huge family friendly success, with many scoring some goodies in the Kid’s Lucky Dip!

Paired with the Kid’s Lucky Dip, Committee Member, Brett Haupt ran four Spin the Wheel raffles where attendees had the opportunity to take home a giant ham, chocolates, a Lions Club Christmas Cake, and an awesome children’s summer toy!

What’s a Christmas Party without an appearance from the big man himself? After running a lap around town to hand out lollies, bubbles and festive cheer, Santa made his grand arrival to the celebrations in a stunning mini-Moke to hand out presents.

The Taylors Beach Progress Association warmly thanks everyone who attended the event, and shares their gratitude to all businesses who made donations towards the event’s success, adding they cannot wait until 2025!

An assortment of exceptional artistic talent currently covers the walls, floors and halls of the TYTO Regional Art Gallery following a wonderful Opening Night of the 46th annual Hinchinbrook Art Awards Exhibition held on the evening of Friday 8 November.

A prestigious celebration of artistic achievement, the Hinchinbrook Art Awards recognise outstanding excellence across various media, providing a valuable platform for both emerging and established artists to display their talents.

The official opening evening attracted a significant crowd, with both the Hinchinbrook Shire Council and the TYTO Regional Art Gallery extending their gratitude and thanks to all participants for their unwavering commitment and effort in submitting a total of 104 remarkable artworks for judging.

Below are the winners for each category as part of the 2024 Hinchinbrook Art Awards:

For a number of years now, Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Tourism had identified a potential opportunity to grow the small business community, through support of emerging micro businesses.
It was with this strategy in mind, that Chamber embarked upon the management of Markets @ the Mosaic, after being approached by a couple of artesian entrepreneurs who were keen to establish a “home-made, designed and grown” market opportunity locally and believed Mercer Lane was the ideal central location.
With the collaboration of other like-minded home-based creatives, in a very short period of time, Markets @ the Mosaic was created and so began the journey of supporting local entrpreneaurs.  
Very pleasingly toward the end of 2023, emboldened by the feedback received and after exploring a business plan, local marketeer Shirley George, took the very brave step to establish a creative space, that would permanently showcase and sell local stall holder’s wares – and so NQ makers Collective was born.
While 2024 saw a slower start for Markets @ the Mosaic, the introduction of a dedicated market co-ordinator and marketing manager, has seen exponential growth in both stall holders and visitation to the CBD on the third Saturday of each month, when the markets are held.  
Increasing marketing promotion through social media sites, radio marketing, collaboration with TEL to expand into tourism markets and inclusion into print media, through the launch of Hinchinbrook Life has seen outstanding results.
As 2024 draws to a close, demand from stall holders is now exceeding available space, however Chamber plans to explore options for expansion in 2025 to accommodate this growth and introduce a greater variety of products.
The final Markets @ the Mosaic will be held in conjunction with the late night shopping event on Thursday 19th December.  
The objective of supporting growing businesses continues to be Chambers focus and it is pleasing to receive feedback from some stall holders how participating in these markets, has assisted their business grow in 2024.

The Lucinda Hotel has been busily gearing up for a spectacular celebration and afternoon of fun, socialisation and lively entertainment ahead of Sunday’s mammoth Boat Giveaway event.
Sunday 15 December will see the hotel stage an epic afternoon with the terrific talents of four-piece rock band, Zacariah set to be staged from 1pm through to 4pm!
“We’re excited to play locally at the Lucinda Hotel as the guys are from Ingham, and my wife is also from the area, and we don’t get to play back “home” very often,” shared Paul Pappas of Zacariah
“It’s been about two to three years since we’ve performed there and we’re excited to put on a show!”
Guest MC Nick Dametto will also be in attendance, and there will be plenty of great prizes and of course, the star of the show and major prize, a $20,000 4.25m Stessl boat equipped with a 30HP Mercury Motor!
The Lucinda Hotel invites the community to come along to enjoy an unforgettable Sunday extravaganza, with lunch offered from 11:30am to 2pm, and their delicious dinner menu running from 5:30pm to 8pm.
Prizes will be drawn from 1pm onwards with a $500 voucher for Townsville’s Ardo Luxury Hotel, a signed Bronco’s jersey and more up for grabs, with the giveaways concluding with the announcement of the major prize winner at 3pm sharp!

In following on from a highly successful evening of late-night shopping on Thursday 28 November, the Hinchinbrook Shire Council is excited to welcome even more festive cheer with another event scheduled for Thursday 19 December!
It should come as no surprise that the spirit of Christmas is well and truly alive across the region, with November’s Late Night Shopping event hosting hundreds of shoppers across Lannercost, Herbert, and Cartwright Streets as well as Hinchinbrook Central and Mercer Lane.
With comparisons drawn to the infamous Australian Italian Festival, the community warmly welcomed the introduction of four new shopping precincts into the mix, with the talents of both the Ingham Theatre Group, and the band, Obsession, filling the air.
“When locals compare an event to the days when the Australian Italian Festival was held in the main street, that’s quite a good accolade,” shared Julie Mac Pherson, Hinchinbrook Shire Council Economic Development and Tourism Coordinator.
“We activated four shopping precincts rather than just Lannercost Street which we have done historically for many years, as we saw this as an opportunity to promote the other shopping precincts in Ingham and drive traffic to other retailers,” she explained.
With a world of both retailers and market stalls on offer for the community to browse and enjoy, a range of discounts, and deals were also promoted to follow suit with the Black Friday sale season.
Plenty of retail goodies, stall holders and neighbouring restaurants also offered discounted dinners and treats to keep shoppers fuelled and energised for the spectacular community event.
“We’re hoping for another great turnout, and if we can support the local traders as well as we did for the first event, that would be sensational,” shared Julie.
With Lannercost Street, Raintree Markets, Conroy Hall Markets, Uptown Markets, and Mercer Lane confirmed as well as plenty of lychees promised for customers to enjoy, additional stallholders and precinct locations are yet to be announced in anticipation of next Thursday’s event.
“We sold out of lychees within an hour last time, so we’ll make sure there’s an adequate supply of lychees for the next event,” Julie added.
Santa and the Grinch will also be in attendance of the evening ready to pose for your family photos with the community invited to join the festivities from 5pm onwards on Thursday 19 December!
